Surveillance: Eurosurveillance
was engaged to conduct surveillance on a plaintiff in a multi-million-dollar
medical malpractice case wherein the plaintiff complained about decreased
mobility, and inability to stand or walk for long periods of time.
Eurosurveillance pre-surveillance investigation discovered that the plaintiff
was planning a family vacation. Eurosurveillance then determined where the
plaintiff would be going (a National Park) and researched the plaintiff’s
travel arrangements. Thereafter, Eurosurveillance dispatched a two-man team
that discreetly followed and videotaped the plaintiff enjoying outdoor
activities, including hiking, for a full week. The videotape evidence was
instrumental in settling the case for hundreds of thousands of dollars less
than anticipated.
Eurosurveillance was retained by a wealthy woman living in Western Europe. The
client advised that her husband was traveling to Romania on business, and she
was concerned that he may be having an affair.
Investigators from Eurosurveillance covertly watched the husband as he
departed his plane upon arrival. The client’s suspicions were quickly
confirmed when the man was greeted with a hug in the in the baggage claim by
an unknown female. Video of the “greeting” was sent by e-mail to the client.
After reviewing the tape, the client requested that the surveillance
continue.
Later the same evening, the woman picked up the husband at his hotel. The
couple was followed to a popular restaurant for dinner. While waiting for a
table, the husband and his mistress were observed and video taped holding
hands and kissing outside the restaurant.
Eurosurveillance was able to identify the mystery woman by running her
vehicle license plate through the Department of Motor Vehicles. With this
information, Eurosurveillance again contacted the client with an update. This
time, the client had heard enough. The client requested that the investigator
wait until her husband and his mistress were seated, and almost through with
their dinner. At that point, the investigator was asked to call the client
(using a cell phone), and approach the couples’ table.
First, the investigator handed the phone to the mistress and told her she had
a call. Looking confused, the woman took the cell phone and said, “hello”?
After a few choice words, the client instructed the woman to hand the cell
phone to her husband who was then informed that his bags would be packed and
at his office upon return.
Missing Persons:Eurosurveillance pfa Romania was
contacted by a family from the US,worried for their older son.The son was
traveling Europe,in his senior gap-year,his plans including a visit to
Romania. At some point he could not be contacted anymore, and his family was
unable to locate his whereabouts. They contacted Eurosurveillance, and
explained the situation.
A counselor was appointed to them, and
in about 48 hrs their son was identified in Bucharest,Romania, being admitted
in an emergency ward at the local hospital.he was robbed and beaten, all ID
and money stolen, and he was admitted in the ER as an unidentified person. With
the help of Eurosurveillance, the thieves were identified and handed over to
the police, his papers recovered partially, and he was guarded by his appointed
counselor 24/7,being attended as well. After his recovery,he was put on a
plane to the US,safe and sound.
Business Crimes:Through
a routine audit, a manufacturer of heavy equipment determined that a once
profitable assembly operation was operating in the red, despite an upturn in
business. Eurosurveillance was engaged to determine if the red ink was a sign
of internal theft.
Working with company auditors, Eurosurveillance’s investigators
determined that the company freight bills were excessive. In conducting the
investigation, Eurosurveillance determined that the company’s freight manager
had set up fictional freight brokers in his own name and in the names of
others, and was submitting bills for the movement of fictional freight. The
scheme, which had been hatched several years before, illegally funneled
nearly a million euros to the freight manager to finance his gambling
addiction.
Eurosurveillance gathered the accounting and banking records necessary for
prosecution, and then closed the loop by obtaining statements from vendors,
conspirators, and ultimately, obtained a signed confession from the freight
manager
Eurosurveillance was engaged by an international computer component
manufacturing company to determine how gold used in the manufacturing process
was disappearing from their facility.
Company records showed that gold use in the manufacturing plant was
inexplicably up more than 300,000 euro in the past accounting period.
Eurosurveillance reviewed the processes used in the manufacturing facility,
the accounting records, and, covertly, the work and personal activities of
those employees involved in the gold specific manufacturing process.
Through
the investigation, Eurosurveillance was able to show how gold had been
intentionally wasted in the manufacturing process, only to be reclaimed latter
by unsavory employees . Eurosurveillance determined that the employees had
smuggled the gold out of the facility after normal working hours, and then
sold it as scrap metal to their relatives in the scrap metal business.
Trade
Secrets & Intellectual Property:A business, which
based its entire product line on proprietary processes and secret chemical
formulas, contacted Eurosurveillance when a key employee, its chief chemist,
left his employment with the company abruptly. Immediately after the chemist
received his annual bonus, he returned to the company premises after closing
and cleared out his personal property, as well as a number of company files
related to the work that he had been doing. The chemist then vacated his
residence, leaving no forwarding information.
Eurosurveillance began a process to locate the chemist, who had intentionally
dropped out of sight. Eurosurveillance
located the missing chemist, and began efforts to discreetly determine
if he was using the stolen technology.
In a short period of time, Eurosurveillance’s investigation identified the
chemist’s conspirators, and documented their newly formed business which was
set up to compete with the Victim Company. Eurosurveillance then obtained
samples of their products, which were found to be identical to the Victim
Company’s products, and were produced using the proprietary processes and
formulations stolen by the chemist from the Victim Company.
As the investigation progressed, Eurosurveillance obtained the cooperation of
an informant who divulged details of the scheme to deprive the Victim Company
of its secrets, and the plans of the new enterprise to capitalize on the
theft. This matter is currently pending Romanian courts prosecution.
A senior scientist of a high tech company, engaged in the development and
deployment of technology to detect electronic fraud activities, abruptly
separated from the company to establish a similar technology program with a
competitor. Eurosurveillance was called in to determine if the scientist was
using proprietary and secret information gained from his prior employment in
his new endeavor.
Through its investigation, Eurosurveillance recovered documents stolen from
the Victim Company, and the senior scientist’s detailed plans for the use of
the stolen information. Eurosurveillance also developed information relating
to other company employees (and former employees) who were recruited to leave
the company to join the senior scientist. The information and witnesses
developed by Eurosurveillance allowed the Victim Company to successfully
prosecute the scientist, and to obtain a civil injunction prohibiting the
competitor company from using any of the ill-gotten technology.
Insurance
Litigation:An international company discovered
evidence that its branch manager had engaged in a number of illegal schemes
which deprived the company of assets while personally enriching the manager.
The company used its accountants and company officers from other locations to
develop preliminary information, and later engaged the services of an
international accounting firm to quantify the loss, and present the matter to
law enforcement.
In the interim, the company terminated the manager and several other
employees. The terminated manager filed an unlawful termination and
defamation lawsuit, seeking tens of millions of dollars in damages. Because
of the financial exposure to the insurance company, and the presence of
numerous allegations of criminal behavior (and possible violent criminal
tendencies on behalf of the terminated manager), Eurosurveillance was engaged
to conduct an investigation into the activities of the former manager.
Eurosurveillance’s investigation substantiated many of the initial
allegations posed by company officers against the former manager. Additional
information was developed relating to other illegal activities on behalf of
the former manager, as well as other former company employees and vendors.
The information and evidence gathered by Eurosurveillance was used by the
insurance company and the Victim Company to reduce their initial exposure
(tens of millions) to a low five-figure settlement.
Employment Issues:Eurosurveillance was called on to reduce costs related to a
workers’ compensation program that was thought to be plagued by fraudulent
and/or abusive claims. Working with the company’s claims administrator,
Eurosurveillance began an economical investigation of each claim involving
time lost from work; looking not only for fraud or abuse, but examining where
the employee might not have been getting the best possible service to insure
a speedy recovery and return to work. This approach has significantly reduced
the number of claims, and the severity of claims. Eurosurveillance was
retained after a stock brokerage experienced a conflict with a customer who
began behaving strangely. Within hours of the incident, Eurosurveillance
arranged for discreet protection for the employees and clients of the brokerage
house, while developing a complete profile of the disgruntled former client.
Working with management, and utilizing the information developed during the
background/profile investigation, the former client was effectively
discouraged from returning to the brokerage firm, and the situation was
defused without incident.
Safeguard
Your Company:An expanding electrical engine
re-manufacturing business engaged Eurosurveillance to conduct a corporate
security evaluation. As a result of the evaluation, the company was able to
provide better security for its parts inventory, which had previously been a
target of internal and external theft. It improved its computer security and
data security resulting in improved confidence in its engineering
intellectual property and inventory control systems. It also improved
employee relations and the quality of employees being hired through enhanced
applicant interviewing and screening and was able to remove a troublesome
employee who had helped a competitor defraud the company.
The changes suggested were easily implemented with only a minimum amount of
costs in hardware and man-hours. The changes resulted in long term economies
and more efficient use of company assets.
